Boil scar. Boils or furuncles are small areas of inflammation starting at the roots of hairs. They are caused by the growth of a micro-organism, usually the bacterium Staphylococcus. A swelling forms round the hair and breaks after a few days, releasing some fluid. It heals leaving a scar. Predisposing factors include unhealthy diet, long illness and diabetes.
