Tattoo removal scar. Scar seen on the forearm of a 37 year-old man after the removal of a tattoo. Tattooing is the introduction of permanent colours under the surface of the skin, usually to create a picture. Removal of tattoos is difficult and unsatisfactory, often resulting in scarring. Large tattoo removal is done by laser treatment or by dermabration, where the upper layer of skin is removed by high speed sanding.
