Endarterectomy scars. Close-up of the scarred and bruised neck of an 82-year-old patient following a carotid endarterectomy. Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical technique for removing obstructions within the lower neck portion of the carotid artery. This patient had stenosis (narrowing) of the left carotid artery and had previously suffered a stroke. The operation was performed in the hope of preventing further strokes occurring. Six days after surgery the crossing scars in the patient's neck can be seen (centre left). The area around the incision site has suffered extensive bruising (red and yellow).
