Caption

Wound on a 57-year-old woman's toe, 2 days after the surgical removal (avulsion) of an involuted toenail. This was a severe form of an abnormally growing, or ingrowing, toenail, where the sides of the nail had curled in on themselves (involution). Toes with ingrowing nails can become infected and sore, making it painful to walk. The condition can be caused by unsuitable footwear or incorrect cutting of the nails.
