Scar on the chest of a 17 year old boy one month after a heart transplant. The transplant was done to treat myocarditis, a potentially-fatal inflammation of the heart muscle. For this procedure, the chest was opened along the line of the scar, by cutting through the sternum (breastbone). Myocarditis is often caused by a viral infection.
