Scar on a 42 year old woman's stomach. A scar can be seen as a vertical purple line in the centre of the image. Scars are areas of tissue formed when the body repairs a wound. To heal lesions the body increase the production of collagen, a tough fibrous protein, to form connective tissue over the wound. Large scars on stomachs are often evidence of surgery - for instance an appendectomy or caesarean section.
