Hernia scar. Scar on the abdomen of a 54-year-old woman after the repair of an incisional hernia. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening, in this case an opening in the abdominal wall. The hernia occurred after surgery to treat diverticular disease, where small pouch-like structures protrude through weak spots in the intestinal wall. Raised pressure in the abdomen, either due to swelling after the surgery, coughing, vomiting or heavy lifting, weakened the healing incision and lead to the hernia.
