Skin next to a scar, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The skin structure is still clearly seen, with an outer layer of cells, the stratum corneum, made up of dead cells that are constantly shed and replaced by new cells from the epidermis below. However, the skin seen here has a different appearance to that of normal skin. The appearance of this skin can also be compared with that of the scar, which can be seen in image M332/121. Magnification: x150 when printed 10cm wide.
