Hernia repair scar. Scars on a 72 year old man's abdomen 10 days after surgery to repair a strangulated inguinal hernia. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening, in this case an opening in the lower abdominal (inguinal) wall. It can be caused by physical straining, such as lifting heavy objects or coughing, or by increased abdominal pressure. In a strangulated hernia, the blood supply of the contents of the hernia is cut off. If left untreated this can result in the hernia turning gangrenous.
