Kidney transplant scar on the abdomen of a 37 year old woman. The patient had a kidney transplant to treat renal (kidney) failure caused by the metabolic disorder diabetes. In diabetes the pancreas does not produce sufficient quantities of the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels. Over time high blood sugar levels damage the kidneys. The kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete it as urine.
