Burn. Second degree burn on the arm caused by an accident with boiling fat. The burn was treated with vitamin E ointment for 3 days. Brief heating of the skin above 49 degrees centigrade results in damage. First degree burns cause reddening of the skin and only affect the epidermis (top layer of skin). Second degree burns damage the skin more deeply causing blisters. Third degree burns destroy the full skin thickness. The affected area will look white or charred. When the skin is burnt it can not protect itself from infection. Treatment includes antibiotic drugs and skin ointments.
