Infected burn on leg. An infected burn on a man's lower leg, caused by a steam cleaner. Skin has peeled back from the wound, which appears red and moist. Pus is collecting on the right. Bacterial infection is a common complication of burns that destroy the skin's outer protective layer. The degree of tissue damage caused by the burn depends on its depth: superficial burns like this one heal without scarring, while third degree burns destroy the whole skin layer and leave permanent scars. First aid for minor burns involves immediate immersion in cold water, followed by covering the area with a light, non-fluffy dressing or leaving it exposed to heal.
