Sodium hydroxide burn. Fingertips of a 76-year- old man one day after he was burnt by sodium hydroxide, or caustic soda. Sodium hydroxide is a strong alkali which is often used as a cleaning agent. It attacks the skin, causing severe tissue damage. Treatment involves immediately washing the affected area with copious amounts of water.
