Grey hair on an elderly man's head. Greying of hair can occur as part of the ageing process, and also due to stress. It is due to the cessation or reduction in the supply of the pigment melanin to the hair shafts. This is controlled by the brain's pituitary gland. Loss of pigment leads to the hair shaft's cortex becoming transparent, and the hair then looks grey or white.
