Geriatric patient. Nursing home staff using a hoist to lift an elderly man out of bed. The man has a physical handicap. He is being cared for in the nursing home's dementia ward. The symptoms of dementia include memory loss, as well as generally reduced cognitive capacity. It is a common affliction of old age, usually due to the shrinkage of brain tissue and loss of nerve cells. In severe cases, the patient requires care and is unable to function independently. The most common cause of senile dementia is Alzheimer's disease. Photographed in the Netherlands.
