Dementia patient being assessed by a nurse using a mirror test. Depending upon the severity of the dementia, the patient may not be able to recognise herself. The symptoms of dementia include memory loss, as well as reduced cognitive capacity. Dementia is common in old age, usually due to the shrinkage of brain tissue and loss of nerve cells. In severe cases, the patient requires care and cannot function independently. The most common cause of senile dementia is Alzheimer's disease. Photographed in the Netherlands.
