Bunions on a woman's feet preventing her from fitting into her shoes. A bunion is a fluid-filled pad on a toe joint, usually the big toe. It is usually caused by increased pressure on the toe joint due to a deformity called hallux valgus, in which the big toe bends away from the inside of the foot, as seen here. This is often due to the wearing of ill-fitting shoes. This condition is very painful. In the early stages a pad may be used to help to straighten the toe, but more advanced cases require surgical treatment.
