Hammer toes. This is a condition in which some toes (the middle three here) become permanently bent. Symptoms include pain in the affected foot and leg, causing difficulty walking. It is caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes which cramp the toes. It can be treated by the wearing of more suitable shoes, with soft pads on the raised joints to prevent rubbing. If left untreated, however, surgery may be needed to correct the deformity.
