Caption

Involuted toenail on a 57-year-old woman's toe. This is a severe form of an abnormally growing, or ingrowing, toenail, where the sides of the nail have curled in on themselves (involution). The severity of the case required the surgical removal (avulsion) of the nail. Toes with ingrowing nails can become infected and sore, making it painful to walk. The condition can be caused by unsuitable footwear or incorrect cutting of the nails.
