The other chromosomes (green) are shown in the background. Cystic fibrosis creates a tendency towards chronic infection of and mucus production in the lungs (blue). Other symptoms include an inability to absorb fats and various other nutrients from food. It is treated by the use of physiotherapy, antibiotics and enzymes to aid food digestion. Despite this, cystic fibrosis usually results in a significantly reduced life expectancy.
