Dyslexic brain activity during reading aloud. This is a composite of a 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain with positron emission tomography (PET) scans overlaid to show active areas (orange). The most active areas are in the left cerebral hemisphere (right), site of the brain's language centres. There is an abnormal area of activity in the globus pallidus (just left of centre) of the right cerebral hemisphere. Dyslexia is a disorder of reading, in which there is difficulty understanding written characters, and how they relate to sounds. For a similar scan showing brain activity in a normal male subject, see image P335/075.
