Brain activity during reading aloud in a normal (top) and dyslexic subject. These are composites of 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain with positron emission tomography (PET) scans overlaid to show active areas (orange). The most active areas are in the left cerebral hemisphere (right), site of the brain's language centres. In the dyslexic, there is an abnormal area of activity in the globus pallidus (just left of centre) of the right cerebral hemisphere. Dyslexia is a disorder of reading, in which there is difficulty understanding written characters, and how they relate to sounds.
