Hearing aid. Close-up of a man's ear in side view, showing a fitted hearing aid. This hearing aid is positioned behind the ear; it has a wheel dial to control the volume of incoming sound, and is battery powered. A thin transparent tube leads from the hearing aid into the ear canal. Hearing aids improve hearing in people with partial deafness. Sound is picked up by a tiny microphone, amplified, and then transmitted into the ear by a tiny speaker. A hearing aid may be fine-tuned to amplify the range of frequencies most needed by the patient.
