Hearing test. Male patient (left) in a soundproof room undergoing a hearing test known as pure-time audiometry. An audiologist (right) is using an audiometer (lower centre) to produce sound at different frequencies. He is testing the patient's ability to hear over a range of frequencies. The patient indicates every time he hears a sound. The audiologist lowers the volume of sound until it is no longer audible. This gives the patient's hearing threshold at each frequency. This test is used to assess the extent of a patient's hearing loss and to investigate possible causes.
