Light micrograph of a smoker's lung. This field of pulmonary alveoli shows several responses to trauma. Black masses of carbon (smoke) are visible throughout, engulfed by phagocytes from the alveolar walls. The small elongated red particles are nuclei of fibroblasts; these form collagenous fibres in response to the irritation. Magnification: x50 at 6x7cm size.
