Passive smoking. Mother smoking a cigarette sits at home in the presence of her young boy. The child is exposed to the cigarette smoke, known as passive smoking. He may inhale secondary smoke from his parent's nicotine addiction, or smoke produced directly by the burning cigarette. Tobacco smoke is implicated as a major cause of asthma in children. It can also cause such respiratory problems as wheezing, bronchitis, and lung cancer in the longer term. Such children are also more likely to become smokers themselves.
