Valerian. View of a flower head and leaves of valerian (Valeriana officinalis). Valerian is a medicinal herb, and infusions can be used as anti- depressants and anti-hypertensives. It can also be used as a treatment for general neuroses, as it has a beneficial sedative effect. Compresses made from the roots relieve muscular pain when applied to an aching area. Some preparations from valerian have proven medical use as antispasmodics, and are used in the treatment of epilepsy. Overdoses of valerian-containing medications may have an adverse effect, leading to headaches, stupor and a feeling of heaviness.
