Hawthorn. View of a branch of the hawthorn, or may tree (Crataegus monogyna), showing its flowers. This is a large shrub native to Europe which has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. Extracts from the bark, flowers and leaves are used in infusions as a treatment for reducing hypertension (high blood pressure). It also has a cardioregulatory effect in cases of irregular heartbeats and other heart disorders. It is useful in treating oedema (fluid retention) due to its diuretic effect, and reduces the pain of sore throats when drunk. The bark can be made into a preparation for reducing fevers, and an alcoholic drink can be fermented from the fruits.
