Cigarette smoking. Obese woman smoking a cigarette. The nicotine in tobacco is absorbed into the body and acts as a nerve stimulant, promoting the release of adrenalin which helps to relieve stress. Nicotine is, however, highly addictive. Cigarettes also contain harmful tar and carcinogens which are a major cause of lung cancer, heart disease and chronic bronchitis. A person is obese if they are more than 20% over the ideal weight for their body height. Obesity also increases the risk of heart disease.
