Field of lavender. Field of lavender plants arranged in rows. Lavender (Lavandula spica) has several medicinal and industrial uses. Lavender oil has very good antiseptic properties, and can be used as an insecticide. Preparations can also relieve coughs and prevent involuntary muscle spasms. It is cultivated throughout Europe as a source of scent and oil. Lavender flowers between midsummer and early autumn, and is harvested just before the flowers are fully open.
