Cigarette filter. Close-up of the filter on the end of a cigarette. This device filters cigarette smoke before it reaches the smoker's mouth. It was developed as a response to early medical studies that linked cigarette-smoking and lung cancer. The intended effect is to filter out the harmful tar and reduce the addictive nicotine being inhaled in the smoke. However, tobacco smoking remains a major cause of lung cancer and chronic bronchitis.
