Passive smoking. Baby reaching for a lit cigarette. Inhalation of tobacco smoke by passive smoking is implicated as a major cause of asthma in children. It can also cause other respiratory problems such as wheezing, bronchitis, and lung cancer. Children exposed to passive smoking may be more likely to become smokers themselves. This child is also at risk of being burnt by the burning end of the cigarette.
