Cannabis. Hands rolling a cannabis or marijuana joint. Marijuana is an illegal drug in most countries. It consists of the leaves and flowering tops of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). Smoking cannabis can cause mental relaxation, accelerated heart rate, perceived slowing of time and heightened senses. Large doses may result in panic attacks, fear of death and illusions and prolonged use can lead to psychological problems and lung damage. Smoking marijuana can help to relieve the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system. However, medical use of the herb remains controversial.
