Cocaine snorting. Man snorting a "line" of cocaine through a rolled up banknote. Several other "lines" are seen on the small mirror. Cocaine is an alkaloid drug obtained from leaves of the coca plant Erythroxylon coca. It is absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal membrane, where it stimulates the central nervous system to produce feelings of awakeness, exhilaration and energy. Prolonged use of cocaine leads to anxiety, paranoia and psychological dependency. Damage to the lining of the nose may occur by snorting this drug. Overdose can result in cardiac arrhythmia, seizure and death.
