Heroin addiction. A heroin user injects his arm while sitting on the bathroom toilet. Beside him is a spoon and candle, used to dissolve the powdered drug in water to make an injectable solution. A belt is tied round his upper arm as a makeshift tourniquet to make veins stand out. Heroin is an opiate analgesic drug which induces stupor and narcotic sleep states. Its danger is that it causes dependence and tolerance. Tolerance leads to ever-increasing doses being taken, frequently resulting in a fatal overdose. Giving up the habit is difficult, as severe withdrawal symptoms are common.
