Sweet sedge plant. Sweet sedge (Acorus calamus), a plant used in herbal medicine. When taken internally, the roots of this plant are believed to have tranquillizing effects and to reduce high temperatures. They are also taken as a digestive aid. The roots are prepared as an infusion, fluid extract or tincture (spirit solution). If used when very fresh, they may contain toxins poisonous to humans.
