An elderly man experiencing lower back pain. Most people experience back pain at some point in their lives, but in most cases it is not serious. It has many causes including muscle, ligament or joint damage, a prolapsed intervertebral disc, osteo- arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and fibrositis. Conventional methods to relieve back pain involve bed rest, wearing appliances, drugs or ultimately corrective surgery. The variable success of such methods is one reason for the increase in techniques such as chiropractic medicine, where manipulation is used to treat back and neck pain as well as related systemic problems.
