Vanilla. Coloured historical artwork of a vanilla plant (Vanilla sp.) in flower. The plant's fleshy fruit, the pod (far right), is the source of vanilla extract. This substance is used as a scent and a food flavouring. The artwork is from a German encyclopaedia called the Bilder-Atlas that was published in 1860.
