Headache. Coloured X-ray of a human skull. The orange area represents the pain of headache or migraine. Headache is one of the most common types of pain. The pain does not come from the brain, which contains no sensory nerves, but from the meninges around the brain and the scalp with its blood vessels and muscles. Common causes of headache include hangover, a noisy environment, irregular meals, poor posture and prolonged travel. Rare causes of headache are hypertension and brain tumours. Medical advice should be sought in cases of persistent headache which does not respond to the common analgesic (painkiller) drugs.
