Neck pain. Elderly woman suffering neck ache clasps the side of her neck and her forehead. Neck pain and stiffness may, in the elderly, be caused by osteoarthritis of cervical vertebrae in the neck. It may also be due to muscle spasm in muscles around the spine. Whiplash injury of the neck is when soft tissues, ligaments and spinal joints, are injured due to the neck being suddenly and forcibly bent. Neck fractures and slipped disc may also cause considerable neck pain. Treatments of milder forms of neck pain include the use of painkilling drugs and massage.
