Elbow pain. Woman holding her arm; the elbow is highlighted in red light to show that it is painful. Painful elbows are caused by over-use of the tendons that connect muscles to the bones in the elbow. The tendons swell and cause pain and tenderness in the joint. This type of repetitive strain injury is known as epicondylitis, tennis elbow or golfer's elbow. The symptoms can be treated by applying ice-packs, painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs. The only cure is to rest the elbow, particularly avoiding the activity which first caused the problem.
