Back pain. Female driver standing by her car and holding her hands to her lower back as she suffers from back pain (lumbago). Lumbago is a generalised term for throbbing pain in the lower spine. It is usually caused by strain to soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons or ligaments, around the bones of the spine. People likely to suffer back pain include those who spend long periods sitting in one position. Treatment includes rest and the use of painkilling drugs. Lumbago can be avoided by adopting a correct posture whilst sitting or by not sitting in the same position for too long.
