Pain points in fibromyalgia. Computer-enhanced illustration of the muscle anatomy of a standing male figure, showing red points of pain in fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is chronic pain in muscles and soft tissues that surround joints. Different countries classify different body points as being important sites of pain in fibromyalgia. Here, the German system lists 24 points of which 15 are visible (one more on the far side of the head, and eight on the back). If 12 out of 24 points are painful when pressed, the diagnosis is fibromyalgia. American doctors list 18 points of pain. The causes of fibromyalgia may be numerous, and treatment depends on the cause.
