Menstrual pain. View of a woman's hands holding her bare lower abdomen, suffering from painful cramps that are a common symptom of the menstrual cycle. Lower abdominal and pelvic pain may occur before or during a menstrual period, or around the time of ovulation. At the time of a period, strong uterine contractions cause the menstrual discharge to be expelled. At ovulation, an egg is forcibly expelled from an ovary. Alternatively the woman may be suffering from stomach ache caused, for example, by dyspepsia (indigestion). Indigestion covers a variety of symptoms sometimes brought on by eating, including heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea and flatulence.
