Ankle pain. Woman's hand holding her ankle while suffering from pain. Ankle pain is often due to a sprained ankle which may occur when the foot is twisted over on its outside edge resulting in overstretched ligaments. Other causes of pain include muscle cramps, inflammation of the sciatic nerve (sciatica) or deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot, or thrombus, forms within a vein. If this happens in the leg it may cause pain, swelling and skin ulceration.
