Back pain. Abstract artwork of a man suffering a stab of lower back pain, or lumbago, after bending down to pick up a bag. The pain is represented by a giant pair of scissors sticking into the man's back. Lower back pain is very common, usually being caused by strain to soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons or ligaments, around the bones of the spine. People likely to suffer back pain are those whose work involves heavy lifting, or those who spend long periods sitting in one position. Pregnant women commonly suffer from back pain during the later stages of pregnancy. Treatment includes rest and the use of painkilling drugs.
