Nerves (yellow) running away from each tooth root (brown) are being struck by lightning, symbolising pain. At upper left, back pain is shown, with the spinal cord and its associated nerves seen. Lower back pain (lumbago) is common. At centre right, a ruptured inter-vertebral disc (purple/orange) is shown putting pressure on a branch of the spinal cord. At lower left, neck pain is commonly associated with pinched nerves in the neck, with the spinal cord of the neck seen in section. Joint pain in the elbow is at bottom centre.
