Back pain. Thermogram showing the areas of pain (white) in a woman's back. The pain may be due to an injured or torn muscle in the back, or a strained ligament. This is likely to be associated with inflammation and increased blood supply, both of which will cause a local rise in temperature. The colours run from white (hottest) through orange, red, pink, dark blue, green and light blue to purple (coolest). Back injury can be a result of lifting heavy objects, sitting in one position for too long or bending awkwardly.
