Back pain. Conceptual image of a model of part of the spine with barbed wire wrapped around it, representing back pain. Back pain is a very common complaint, which most often affects the lumbar (lower) region of the back. The spine is a column of cylindrical bones called vertebrae that support the trunk and head and protect the spinal cord. Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs (blue) that allow a degree of flexibility and cushion the vertebrae during movement. Each vertebrae has bony projections that provide attachment sites for the muscles and ligaments that hold the spine together.
