Hickman catheter sited on a male patient's chest. A Hickman catheter is used when repeated drug infusions or the taking of frequent blood samples are required. Applications include the administration of courses of cytotoxic drugs used in the treatment of certain cancers. The catheter may be left in situ, making it unnecessary for repeated insertions of a hypodermic needle into the same vein.
